Types of worms in dogs

  1. Roundworms

The first type I am going to mention is Roundworms also known as Toxocara Canis, their scientific name. These worms are of white color and look just like spaghetti. The main residence area of this worm is the intestine of your dog. These worms may grow up to 20cm or eight inches and feeds on your dog’s food in its belly. These roundworms lay eggs on regular basis. Roundworms are transferred to the dogs from the soil as their eggs are encapsulated in a very hard shell which protects them up to many years. Roundworms can severely affect your dog’s growth and could make it very weak. So this is one of the dangerous types of worms in dogs.


  1. Whipworms

This is one of the most commonly found parasites in the dogs. These worms are very difficult to detect in a dog’s body as they shed very few eggs which are hardly found by doing any test.  They are like threads but the only difference between a thread and whipworm is that a whipworm is a bit larger at the one end. You have to keep an eye on your dog’s stool to look for these types of worms in dog. If the stool of your dog is covered in mucous then you should take your dog to a veterinarian for checkup. The veterinarian could only give a prescription on the benefit of doubt.


  1. Hookworms

Hookworms are also very much commonly found in dogs. These are the vampires who are very fast and travel quickly to the small intestine and start sucking blood of your dog. Dogs could be infected with hookworms if they come in contact with any soil contaminated with soil or it digests a substance containing hookworm eggs. These worms could also be transferred to the puppy dog from its mother during milking process. There are cases where hookworms reportedly killed puppies due to loss of blood.


  1. Tapeworms

Tapeworm is one of other types of worms in dogs. They often infect the dogs that have fleas on their body. A tapeworm can grow up to 4 to 6 inches in size within the belly of the dog. It could also be detected by seeing the stool as they tend to continuously move. Tapeworms are pretty much odd, you cut one head and two more shall grow. They are very much difficult to kill and normal methods are useless to kill them.


Symptoms of Worms in dogs

Worms are very dangerous for dogs and there are many cases according to which dogs die due to worm infestation. So you should keep an eye on your dog for any symptom which may indicate that a worm infestation is in process. Following are the dog worm’s symptoms which you must look out for:

  1. Low Energy

Dogs are normally way more energetic and tend to always play and shed love to their owner. But If you notice that your dog is suddenly less active and is showing no interest in games and healthy activities and is easily out of energy, then beware this is one of another signs of worms in dogs.

If your dog shows a sudden type of change in its food activities or appetite then bewares it is one of the symptoms of worms in dogs. Because dogs when are infested by worms often eat less and lost their hunger due to germs in their intestine. But sometimes the fact is also opposite as some parasites feed on the food in the belly of the dog; some dogs may eat more than normal and on a more frequent level.

A dog which is energetic, healthy and happy will have a very shiny and thick hair coat. But if your dog’s coat is becoming dull and dry then beware it is one of signs of worms in dogs. As some parasites infect the internal nervous system of the animal so their hair starts to leave their roots.


  1. Attaching and skin irritations

One of the sings of worms in dogs isitching and skin irritations. If you dog are feeling restless and uncomfortable than it was ever before that believe me you got a problem to deal with. Some parasites directly attack skin of the animal and cause rashes and red marks on them.


  1. Bottom rubbing

One of another symptoms of worms in dogs in bottom rubbing. If you feel that your is rubbing its bottom against the floor more occasionally than ever then you got to worry because it is one of signs of worms in dogs as a certain type of parasite causes problem around anal glands of the dog. So dogs feel irritation around it and they rub there bottom against the ground.
